Overview — Cusco City Tour: Explore the Inca Capital, Sacsayhuaman & Temple of the Sun

Cusco, in the native language of Quechua is Qosqo, meaning “Center of the Universe, Navel of the World” considered the capital of the Inca empire called Tawantinsuyo. UNESCO, since 1982 gave it the title of Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and in South America it is considered the Archaeological Capital of America. Without a doubt, the Imperial city of Cusco is the most important tourist destination in Peru for having the most important icon Machu Picchu. The Historic Center is considered a museum open to all our visitors, its streets combine Inca walls and Colonial houses, are the settings that invite you to discover the deepest roots of our history, with a thousand-year-old past, full of ancestral traditions and customs that are shared from generation to generation, which enrich the history of the country. The Cusco Valley is very special because it contains archaeology and traditions of pre-Inca cultures such as the Chanapata culture, Marcavalle culture, the Killke, the Qotakalli, skillfully included in the Inca thought and philosophy.

This tour is the perfect introduction to discover Cusco at its best, covering all the Inca and colonial places of great interest in the historic center, highlighting the Cusco Cathedral, the Qoricancha Temple of the Sun plus the Sacsayhuaman archaeological park, the Q’enko temple of sacrifices, the Puka Pukara checkpoint and finally the Tambomachay Ceremonial Fountains. Enjoying this great destination is living the best of your experiences in the Cradle of Inca Civilization, explore all this on our City Tour in Cusco.

Itinerary Sacred Valley of the Incas

Our Cusco City Tour begins in the afternoon with a pick-up from your hotel in the historic center, to start this fascinating experience discovering the capital of the ancient Inca Empire. The first stop is the Cusco Cathedral, located in the Plaza de Armas. Here you can appreciate its colonial architecture, Baroque altars, and paintings from the Cusco School, which tell stories of the cultural fusion between the Andes and Europe.

Next, we head to Qoricancha, also known as the Temple of the Sun. This site was the most important spiritual center of the Inca world and still retains part of its original structure, upon which the Convent of Santo Domingo was built.

After exploring the historic center, we leave the city to visit the main archaeological sites located in the surrounding areas. We begin with Sacsayhuamán, an imposing ceremonial fortress built with enormous stone blocks assembled with astonishing precision. We continue to Qenqo, a mysterious rock-carved sanctuary believed to have been used for religious rituals, and then to Puka Pukara, an ancient Inca military outpost with panoramic views of the valley.

We finish at Tambomachay, a temple dedicated to the worship of water, with canals and fountains that still flow today.

At the end of the tour, we return to the city of Cusco around 6:30 p.m., dropping you off at a central location so you can continue exploring the city at your own pace or relax after an afternoon filled with history and culture.

RECOMMENDATION: Upon your arrival in Cusco, we suggest taking the afternoon to acclimatize. Enjoy a stroll through the Plaza de Armas, the San Pedro Market, or the San Blas neighborhood. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals, and try a coca or muña tea to help you adjust to the altitude.
