Salkantay to Machu Picchu Trek – Off-the-Beaten-Path Inca Trail Adventure

This trek is spectacular for those travelers who want to get off the beaten track, but still experience a desert hike and the original Inca Trail. It is a wonderful journey that will take you right from the Apurimac River basin to the Urubamba River and around the impressive Salkantay Mountain, which is the second largest mountain in the Cusco region (6,277m/20,577ft). On this spectacular trail of twists and turns, you will ascend through high mountain ranges and descend through pockets of cloud forest. You will experience the wildest landscapes and the wonder of the oldest traditions and finest buildings on the planet, a series of diverse ecological zones filled with a huge variety of plants and birds. The ancient and remote trail passes through archaeological sites, leading you to the architectural and cultural grandeur of Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

Cusco – KM 82 – Hatunchaca – Ayapata

Your pick up will be at 5:00 am, we will take you in our private transportation to the town of Mollepata for 2 hours and a half where we will have our breakfast (not included) at the culmination of our breakfast we will continue to Soraypampa for 1 hour and a half. On the way you will enjoy spectacular views of villages like Iscuchaca and Limatambo, impressive valleys and snow-capped mountains like Salkantay. Arriving at Soraypampa we will enjoy the incredible views of the glaciers of the mountains of Humantay (5,900m / 19,356ft) and Salkantay (6,217m / 20,396ft). We will hike for 2.5 hours round trip to see the turquoise lake of Humantay and then gently ascend to Salkantaypampa where we will camp. We will enjoy our afternoon tea, coffee or hot chocolate. The views on this day are really impressive at night we will delight ourselves with a rich and varied dinner made by our chef and then we will see the sky in its maximum splendor, we will see the milky way and the famous flame shape in the starry sky.

Salkantaypampa – Japanese Pampa.

Continuing the second day, we will wake up very early in the morning to have our breakfast, our team will provide you with coca tea or muña in the morning in order to start with energy and lots of encouragement at the end of our rich breakfast, we will continue walking off the traditional routes for approximately 3 hours uphill. We will make a stop for lunch on the way and continue our walk for 3 hours more, until we reach our camp, which is approximately 1 km from the snow-capped Salkantay. On the way we will enjoy the magnificent views of all the snow-capped mountains, lakes, glaciers and amazing valleys. Arriving at our camp in the afternoon we will enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee and then have our dinner.

Pampajaponesa – Sisaypampa.

Our third day begins with our rich breakfast in the morning to then make a slow ascent of approximately 4 hours to reach the Incachiriaska Pass (4,880 m/16,010 ft), which translates as “the place where the Inca refreshes” after arrival at such a magnificent place we will have lunch prepared by our chef. Around this area, on the rocky cliffs, lives the Andean condor, the largest flying bird in the world. From here, the trail levels off downhill to reach our campsite and spend the night in Sisaypampa where we will have our overnight stay and dinner.

Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes

After a delicious breakfast in the morning, we will start walking towards the end of the valley, which will connect with a wider valley called Pampacahua. There, we find an Inca canal that is still in full use by the local agricultural settlements. At the end of the Pampacahua, we will find our first Inca archaeological site called Paucarcancha, then we will pass this archaeological center to reach Wayllabamba part of the famous Inca trail where we will have lunch. Then, we walk for 3 hours more through the valley of Llullucha to reach our camp in Llulluchapampa, where we can enjoy our afternoon tea, in front of the magnificent views of the beautiful valley and then have our dinner and finish our day.

Lluluchapampa – Pacaymayu – Phuyupatamarca

Early in the morning, we have breakfast and begin our ascent for approximately 2 hours following an original Inca stone path up to Warmi wañusqa Pass (4,217m/14,047ft), where we have a magnificent view of our ascent. Then we will descend by a reconstructed Inca Trail to the Pacaymayu River where we will have lunch. Afterwards, we will walk uphill for 2 more hours to the Runcurakay Pass (3,977m/13,127ft). From this viewpoint we will enjoy the incredible views of all the surrounding mountains. Then we descend for 3 more hours to Phuyupatamarca (3,650m/12,047ft) where we will spend the night

Today is the most beautiful day of our trek, we will have breakfast early in the morning and enjoy the sunrise, see the Urubamba canyon, Machu Picchu mountain and the impressive Inca sites. After that, we descend for 2 hours through cloud forests to Wiñay Wayna for lunch. Then, we walk for 1 hour to the Sun Gate, arriving here we will enjoy your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu and all the surrounding mountains. Then, we will descend to the citadel to take our transportation to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night in a hotel (optional hotel).

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

This is the day we are all waiting for, we will leave our hotel after an early breakfast, around 5:30 am we will take the bus to the ruins of Machu Picchu in time for sunrise. Once inside the citadel, we will have a 2 hour guided tour with free time to continue exploring, take pictures and the option to climb Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain or walk to the Sun Gate (optional). After our guided tour we will take the bus to return to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy lunch and at 2:55, 3:20 or 4:22 pm, we will take our Expedition train back to Ollantaytambo, and then return to the city of Cusco in our private transportation.

If you wish, we can pick you up from the airport to give you a warm welcome to the city of Cusco and transfer you to your hotel, so you must inform us of your flight details at least 14 days before your trip. On the day of your arrival, please look for our representative who will be holding a sign with the META Peru logo at the airport (coordinate when making your reservation).

The information talk will take place the night before the trek at 6:00 pm at our office or at your hotel.

Please note that we cannot purchase your Machu Picchu tickets without the following information:

Remember: that during the period of 2025 the tickets to the Inca citadel (MACHUPICCHU) are in high demand so we recommend you make the reservation in advance to guarantee an unforgettable quality experience.

SECOND, we require a deposit of $250.00 USD per person, in order to purchase the entrance tickets to the archaeological park of MACHUPICCHU. You can make your deposit by clicking on the symbols VISA, PAYPAL or the payment method that is enabled when you click on BOOK NOW that is located on the right side of the chosen tour or you can also send us a message to our email to contact you, this link will be found in INQUIRE NOW.

We would appreciate it if you pay in cash at our office (we accept US dollars or Peruvian soles) during your briefing 2 or 4 days before your trip. We have many ATMs in downtown Cusco. You can also pay with VISA or PAYPAL online, but you will have to pay a 5.5% service charge, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. To pay your balance via PAYPAL, you must log in to your PAYPAL account using our email address of  metaperutravel@gmail.com.

We recommend you pay in cash at our offices to avoid this charge.

At META PERU your care and experience is the most important thing.

¡Yes! You must bring your original passport and it is very important that it has the same passport number that you sent us to book your permit for the Machu Picchu Tour or package. Your passport will be checked when you enter Machu Picchu and when you board the train. In case you are renewing your passport, please send us a copy of your old passport to secure your permission and be able to change it when you get your new passport. If so, please send us a copy of your new passport as soon as possible.

DISCOUNTS

  • 18-25 years old: 30 USD. Information required on the student card: university name, student name, student photo, expiration date, etc. A copy of the card is required at the reservation and government approval for the discount.
  • Children under 18 years old: 30 USD. Please send us a copy of your passport at the time of booking.
  • Children under 11 years old: 40 USD. Please send us a copy of your passport at the time of booking.

In the event that you are unable to finish the trek due to health reasons, our team will take you to the nearest town for assistance with transportation. We always carry oxygen on our treks for any respiratory issues. In extreme cases, we can arrange for a helicopter at your expense. (Travel insurance required, recommended). There are no refunds in the unlikely situation that you are unable to finish the trek.

Generally, those who need help getting off the trail are taken to Ollantaytambo and if they recover quickly they continue the journey to Aguas Calientes (cost incurred by the trekker) and visit Machu Picchu according to the original plan.

Unfortunately, the answer is No. Once the permits have been purchased, the Peruvian government does not allow any changes, so we cannot change any dates after the permit has been purchased. The permits are also non-transferable and non-refundable. If you cancel your Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 days, the deposit is not refundable at all.

Of course! Round-trip transfer to your hotel is included in all our packages! If you have booked your hotel in the Sacred Valley, we will drop you off there and vice versa.

If you are satisfied with the services provided, a tip is appreciated by our staff, although it is not mandatory. While it may not be a custom, it is of great importance to the people who will take care of you during the trek. It inspires excellent service and is an ingrained feature of the tourism industry in many META Peru destinations. Of course, you are free to tip as much as you like, depending on your perception of the quality and length of your trip. Remember, tipping is not mandatory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
