The Most Famous Hike in Peru & South America
3 Days & 2 Nights
Escape the routine and immerse yourself in the pure magic of the Amazon. On this 3-day eco-adventure, you will explore the pristine waters of Lake Apu Victor and discover the fascinating Monkey Island. Encounter unique primate species in their natural habitat, observe vibrant wildlife, and walk among ancient trees that make this sanctuary a true earthly paradise.
Our adventure begins with a welcome at the airport in Puerto Maldonado, the Biodiversity Capital of Peru. After a brief panoramic bus tour of the city, we will transfer to Port Capitanía to board a motorized boat and navigate the currents of the Lower Madre de Dios River. During the river journey, we can spot capybaras, caimans, herons, and turtles in their natural habitat.
Upon arrival at our lodge, we will be welcomed with a refreshing regional fruit nectar before settling into our cozy, rustic-designed bungalows. After enjoying our first lunch, we will begin a guided walk along an interpretive trail toward Cocha Caimán, a small lagoon inhabited by specimens of black and white caimans. At dusk, we will witness the sunset over the river before returning to the lodge for dinner and free time in the bar and games room.
RECOMMENDATION It is important to bring lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts to protect against insects, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and a water bottle to stay well hydrated during jungle trail tours.
We will wake up to the songs of exotic birds and the howling of monkeys to enjoy a restorative breakfast. Afterward, we will begin a hike along jungle trails, crossing bridges over streams until we reach the majestic Lake Apu Víctor, a crystal-clear mirror of water surrounded by swamps and lush trees. We will climb the Amazonian Viewpoint to obtain a panoramic view of the ecosystem, spotting toucans, macaws, hoatzins, herons, and, with luck, the famous giant river otter. We will return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, we will take a five-minute boat ride to Monkey Island. Accompanied by our guide, we will walk its trails to observe various species of primates such as the spider monkey, capuchin, pygmy marmoset, and squirrel monkey, as well as coatis, sloths, and birds. We will enjoy the sunset on the island before returning to the lodge for the farewell dinner.
RECOMMENDATION It is suggested to bring binoculars to appreciate the wildlife in the tree canopy from the viewpoint, a camera with well-charged extra batteries, hats or caps, and a lightweight rain poncho, as the tropical climate in the low jungle can bring sudden rains.
After a restful sleep surrounded by the sounds of nature, we will share our last breakfast in the lodge's main dining room. Afterwards, we will board the motorized return boat along the Madre de Dios River back to the city of Puerto Maldonado. We will coordinate the direct transfer from the port to the airport to connect on time with your return flight to Lima or your next destination.
RECOMMENDATION Keep your identity documents or passport, airline tickets, and valuables close at hand in your carry-on luggage. It is recommended to schedule a midday departure flight to ensure the river transfer goes smoothly.

Puerto Maldonado can be visited year-round. The dry season (May to October) offers sunnier days and easier trail conditions, while the rainy season (November to April) brings lush landscapes, higher river levels, and peak wildlife activity.
Most excursions, such as the visit to Caimán Cocha and Monkey Island, are rated as easy to moderate. The walks are slow-paced and educational, designed for travelers of average physical condition.
Lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts, comfortable closed-toe walking shoes or trekking boots, a hat, a light rain poncho, and swimwear.
Yes, as a tropical rainforest environment, insects are present. We strongly recommend bringing a high-DEET insect repellent and wearing long sleeves during evening walks.
Large suitcases remain securely stored or are safely transported in the boat compartments. You only need a small backpack with your daily essentials for the excursions.
