The attraction of Huchuy Qosqo trek is the combination of the impressive Inca ruins, isolated rural indigenous villages, magnificent snow-capped mountains, exotic vegetation of different types and varieties. The trail goes “off the beaten track”, over high Andean passages, through the Sacred Valley of the Incas with its unforgettable panoramic views, and visits “The Green House of the Incas”, MORAY and the salt mines… which absolutely no one else does. It ends at one of the 7 wonders of the world: Machu Picchu.
The archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo is believed to have been built during the reign of the eighth Inca ruler, Viracocha. The Inca rulers acquired large royal estates to increase their power and wealth and that of their descendants who inherited the estates. The royal estates served also as elegant rural palaces and sometimes fortresses to defend themselves from rivals for power. Thus, the name Huchuy Qosqo, “Little Cusco,” referred to a royal estate or government center modeled on the Inca capital.

We will begin the Huchuy Qosqo to Machu Picchu trek with a pick up from your hotel at 6am and then we will head in our private transport to the village of Patabamba (3,800m/12,467ft), 1 hour away from Cusco city. Once we arrive, we will get ready by putting on sunscreen as protection is paramount and then we will begin a gentle uphill walk for the next 3 hours to reach the highest point of the trek (4,200m/13,779ft). From there, we have fantastic views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and valleys. We descend towards the village of Pucamarca and spend some time at the Inca ruins. From there we follow the original Inca trail to the Inca city of Huchuy Qosqo. We will have time to explore the town and then we will head to our accommodation in a homestay in the village of Pucamarca. Here, our guide will introduce you to the local family who will show you their room for the night with all the amazing views of the surroundings and the Inca city. In the late afternoon, you will enjoy your tea and then have dinner with the local family. In the evening, you will have the chance to enjoy the sky full of bright stars and see the Inca constellations that our guide will show you.
After a delicious breakfast in the morning, we will have a guided tour of the Inca village of Huchuy Qosqo, in which you will discover Inca rural houses, sacred temples, agricultural terraces, warehouses, water channels. After having had time to explore everything, we head downhill to the village of Lamay for approximately 2 hours. Our private van will be waiting for us to take us to the village of Urubamba, where we will have lunch.
Then, we will head to the archaeological site of MORAY, also known as «The Greenhouses of the Incas», which is a unique and fascinating site, built by the Incas. There we will appreciate different levels of terraces that are carved into a huge bowl, part of which was excavated by the Incas. The terraces have varied microclimates, depending on how deep the bowl is located, they were previously used by the Incas to discover the optimal growing conditions for their crops. After having time to enjoy and explore the site, we continue driving towards the colonial town of Maras «the pre-Incan salt mine (Salineras)». Thousands of salt flats have been used for salt extraction since before Incan times. A hot spring at the top of the valley discharges a small stream of water heavily laden with salt, which is diverted into the salt flats and evaporated to produce a salt now used for human and animal consumption. The set of salt flats carved around the area is quite beautiful.
Then, we continue our journey to Ollantaytambo, where we will explore the impressive village of Ollantaytambo where we will see the mix of colonial and Incan architecture. In the afternoon, we will take the train to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night in a hotel (optional).
